Rating: ★★★☆☆

Date Read: January 2026

Life in January was a bit hectic and I had bought myself a kindle (for Christmas, because you know, who doesn’t buy themselves Christmas presents?) My new years resolution was to declutter and I had shelves of books that I had bought – maybe just because – that I needed to read and get through.

If I remember correctly, I bought this in the summer of 2025 from The Works in one of their multibuy offers that they do on paperbacks! So when I was looking to clear the shelves, I was looking for books that look like they might be quick and easy reads – light hearted and a page turner that I could read in a few days. And this book delivered…! It was exactly that.

The Story

Without too many spoilers, the book is about a woman called Cassie Greenberg, she is an aspiring artist who works multiple jobs in a coffee shop and a library – and she is about to get evicted from her flat. She finds a “too good to be true” roommate situation with  Frederick Fitzwilliam and Cassie finding out that Frederick is a vampire! (No shock there, it’s in the title!)

The build up to their romance is the will she stay and help him adapt to the modern world or will she go. You read about – the pros, cons and the red flags. I guess when you move in with a vampire – you’d think there are a lot of red flags that make you question the suitability – but we’ve all turned a blind eye to red flags!

I also love that it isn’t just (what I call…) flat text. There are text messages and emails exchanged between characters and notes (due to Frederick not being great with technology – his preferred method of communicating with Cassie, with their sleep patterns, is via notes).

My Opinion

The book is a rom-com that I would love to see as a film. I think you could make it a good film – but the characters make it. Especially Frederick and his “friend” Reginald. They’re both so eccentric and quirky – and their text message exchanges within the book had me in stitches. I think, if I am being honest, Cassie is a bit plain Jane. I don’t think there is as much character. She was so indecisive and kind of ‘meh’ – I felt like she was submissive to everything and it was very one sided. The male roles in the book are much more dominant and interesting that it overpowers her even though she is the main character in the book.

Frederick’s intentions were clear – I don’t think it was with her. It felt very one sided. There was some spice – and by some I mean very mild – but the last series I finished reading was ACOTAR so the couple of pages in this was nothing in comparison to the pages and pages across chapters in the ACOTAR series (and they’re not even the worst!) I know people who have let their 13 year read ACOTAR and I have raised an eyebrow – but I think this would be a suitable and reasonable amount.

There was part of the book (which I don’t want to spoil) that I felt was very anti-climatic and there could have been some real juicy bits when he goes to visit his mum. I actually re-read the chapter because I was adamant that I had missed something. I was expecting some drama, a bit of a fight – some more twists or back story to Fredericks past – but there wasn’t that. And I think that was a shame and the reason I only gave it 3 out of 5 stars.

However, I enjoyed the book. It made me laugh, it was a book I got through in a couple of days which is exactly what I wanted. And because I enjoyed it – I did move straight onto the next book: My Vampire Plus One – I am in the middle of this one now and the main focus is on Reginald and a girl he meets called Amelia.
